Theme 4: Community Space, Social Cohesion, Social Development, Community Safety

Community, health and social infrastructure are critical to ensuring a successful revitalization in Lawrence Heights. We need to see these priorities reflected as part of the master vision for the neighborhood.

Strengthen the ‘Use of Space’ policy to allow space in the community to be more accessible.

Formalize an equity impact assessment and plan for how systemic racism will be confronted as part of the revitalization plan.

Commit to understanding the Black experience through an intersectional lens.

Update policies to reflect a commitment to advancing the interests of Black people.

Addressing Systemic Racism

Create a mechanism within the Centre for Advancing the Interests of Black People for Black staff and tenants that acts as a safe space for Black staff and tenants experiencing ABR issues.

Health infrastructure 

Work with the Coalition and community to identify any gaps and need for health infrastructure.

Work with the Coalition, Toronto Public Health and other community agencies to develop a mental health strategy and culturally relevant, responsible, and intersectional mental health service programs.

Use ABR analysis to review policies and procedures that focus on social determinants of health for Black residents.

Safety infrastructure 

Work with the Coalition and community to identify any gaps and need for community safety and develop a plan for how security will be improved in the neighbourhood 

At least $1 million life skill support programs

Ensure bike lanes to support community safety and support active and healthy living

Ensure that all work and programs related to community safety are from a wellness perspective.
